Many otherwise-happy children find Year 7 destabilising. New school, eight different teachers, multiple classrooms, a longer day, larger peer group. Here's how to soften the transition.
Before the move
Visit the school site. Walk the route. Buy the uniform together. Practise the timetable layout. Demystifying the practical mechanics removes 80% of low-level anxiety.
Independence skills
By summer of Year 6, your child should be able to pack their own bag the night before, manage a basic timetable, ask a teacher for help, and find their way around an unfamiliar building. If any of these are wobbly, work on them in the holidays.
Friendship transitions
Most children change friendship groups in Year 7. That's normal and healthy. Children stuck with primary friends often find it harder to settle.
When to consider mentoring
If your child is anxious about the move, or you know they'll be one of few from their primary going to a particular secondary, a few sessions of transition mentoring can build confidence. Our mentoring service runs transition-focused programmes specifically for this stage.
