Surviving Year 7: a survival guide for parents

What to expect in your child's first term of secondary school, what to worry about, and what to leave alone. A pragmatic guide for parents.

1 February 2026

Year 7 is a settling-in year. Most schools deliberately keep academic pressure low so children can find their feet socially and organisationally. Here's what to expect and where to step in.

What's normal

Tiredness in week 1–4. Forgotten kit. One or two minor falling-outs with new friends. A teacher whose name your child can't remember. Some grumbling about homework. All normal.

When to step in

Tears most days, persistent loss of appetite, refusal to attend, friendship issues that escalate, or homework that's clearly beyond their level — these are signals to contact the form tutor early. Don't wait for parents' evening.

The bag and the planner

Help your child set up their bag and planner together for the first few weeks. Then step back. The goal is independence by Christmas, not perfectionism by October.

Homework volume

Year 7 homework typically runs 30–60 minutes a night. If your child is regularly doing more than 90 minutes, something is off — either they're slower than the average pace (which is fine and worth supporting with tutoring), or they're being given too much.
