1. Purpose
Home tuition is a privileged form of access to children in their own home. Every EDU Archives Tutors home tutor signs this Code of Conduct before delivering any in-home session. Breach of the Code may result in suspension and removal from our register.
2. Before the session
Read the family briefing and risk assessment. Confirm the address, postcode, parking arrangements, and child's stage and learning profile. Carry photo ID and a working mobile phone. Check in with EDU Archives Tutors before the session begins.
3. Arrival and sign-in
Arrive on time — punctuality matters in family homes. Wear smart, modest clothing appropriate for a professional working in someone else's home. Wear your EDU Archives Tutors lanyard and show photo ID on arrival. Confirm a parent or appropriate adult is in the home.
4. During the session
Conduct the session in a shared space — kitchen, dining table, study — never in a closed bedroom. Keep the door open. Keep your mobile phone away from the child. Maintain professional boundaries throughout: clear, kind, focused on learning.
- No physical contact beyond a handshake or high-five — and only when initiated by the child
- No personal information shared with the child about your home or life
- No use of social media during the session, on any device
- No discussion of other families you work with — strict confidentiality applies
- No food or drink other than what the family offers and you accept politely
- No photographing, filming or audio-recording children at any point
5. Communication boundaries
All communication with the family takes place through EDU Archives Tutors or via parent-mediated channels agreed in advance. You must not:
- Give a child your personal mobile, email, or social media accounts
- Add a family member on any personal social media platform
- Use private WhatsApp or text messages to communicate with a child
- Accept gifts or hospitality of more than nominal value (£20)
- Handle cash payments — all fees are billed through EDU Archives Tutors
6. Ending the session
Finish on time. Tidy your work area. Give the child a verbal summary of what was covered and what to practise. Speak briefly with the parent to confirm next session. Sign out via EDU Archives Tutors check-out procedure on leaving the home.
7. Progress notes
Within 24 hours of every session, submit a short written progress note covering: topics covered, the child's progress, suggested home practice, and any concerns. Notes are shared with the family and visible to EDU Archives Tutors.
8. Reporting concerns
Any safeguarding concern — anything that suggests a child is at risk of harm — is reported to EDU Archives Tutors' Designated Safeguarding Lead the same day. Where immediate risk is present, call 999 directly in parallel.
9. Breach
Any breach of this Code may result in immediate removal from the placement, suspension from the EDU Archives Tutors register, referral to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO), the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), the police, and your professional regulator where applicable.
