6 June 2026
A-Level results day 2026 falls on Thursday 14 August 2026 β a week before GCSE results. For Year 13 students, it's the day university places are confirmed (or not), Clearing opens, and a lot of decisions happen quickly. Here's the rundown.
What happens at 8am
By 8:00am on results day, two things happen in parallel:
- Schools open the results hall β students collect printed slips with their A-Level grades for each subject
- UCAS Track / Hub updates with university decisions β your status changes to "Unconditional Firm" (got your firm-choice offer), "Unconditional Insurance" (missed firm, got insurance), or "Unsuccessful" (missed both)
If you got your firm offer
Congratulations β your place is confirmed. You'll receive joining information from the university in the next few weeks. No further action is needed.
If you missed your firm and went to insurance
You're going to your insurance choice. Their joining info will follow. If you'd rather try for something else, you can release yourself into Clearing (see below) β but only do this if you're sure.
If you missed both β Clearing
Clearing is the system that matches students without an offer to universities with unfilled places. It opens at 5pm on the day before results day for self-release, and runs through October.
Practically: log into UCAS, get your Clearing number, then call universities directly. Most have a Clearing phone line published from 8am results day. You can call any university with any offer (not just the ones you originally applied to). Some courses fill within hours β call early.
Appealing a grade
If you think a grade is wrong, request a Priority Review of Marking through your school within the published Clearing deadline. Priority reviews are turned around quickly. Note that remarks can move grades down as well as up.
Resits and gap years
Full A-Level resits happen in summer 2027 β there's no November resit option for full A-Levels (unlike GCSE English/Maths). Many students who miss their grades take a productive gap year and reapply with confirmed grades β often a stronger position.
If you're sitting A-Levels next year
Use results day as motivation. Our A-Level tutoring starts at Year 12; the most effective programmes run consistently from October through to exams.
