GCSE English Language Paper 1: how to score full marks on each question

Paper 1 of AQA GCSE English Language tests reading and creative writing across one fiction extract and an unseen creative writing brief. Here's how to score well on each question, with the focus an examiner is actually looking for.

Q1 — Identify (4 marks)

Find four explicit details from the specified lines. Most students lose marks by paraphrasing or inferring. Quote directly. Move on.

Q2 — Language analysis (8 marks)

Pick two specific language features, quote short evidence, and explain effect on the reader. The trap is identifying techniques without explaining why the writer chose them.

Q3 — Structural analysis (8 marks)

Focus on whole-text structure: openings, shifts, perspective, focus. The most common error is treating Q3 as Q2 — discussing sentence-level features when the question wants narrative-level ones.

Q4 — Evaluation (20 marks)

Form a clear personal response to a statement, supported by evidence and analysis. Examiners reward strong, balanced opinion. Be confident.

Q5 — Creative writing (40 marks)

Two marks blocks: 24 for content/organisation, 16 for technical accuracy. Plan for 10 minutes, write for 35, check for 5. Vary sentence length, use deliberate craft, and resolve the piece — don't run out of time.
