Most GCSE revision time gets spent on techniques that feel productive but don't move grades much. Cognitive scientists have known this for decades; teachers know it; tutors know it. The problem is that the techniques that actually work are uncomfortable and look unproductive — so students avoid them.
Here are the four techniques our GCSE tutors use most, what the research says about each, and how to actually use them.
1. Retrieval practice
Retrieval practice means trying to recall information without looking at your notes. Closed-book practice questions, blank-page brain dumps, flashcards used the right way (front, attempt answer, then check) — all retrieval.
It works because the act of recall strengthens memory traces. Re-reading doesn't, because your brain knows the answer is right there.
- End every revision session with 5 minutes of brain-dump on the topic just covered
- Use flashcards in 'attempt-then-check' mode, not 'flip-and-recognise' mode
- Practise past-paper questions before going back to notes — particularly important in the run-up to your GCSE mocks
2. Spaced practice
Spaced practice means revisiting topics at gradually increasing intervals — not cramming. The cognitive science is overwhelming: information reviewed at spaced intervals is retained far longer than information crammed.
The simplest way to space practice is to keep a rolling timetable: today's new topic, yesterday's review, last-week's quick check. Apps like Anki do this automatically with flashcards.
3. Past-paper practice with mark schemes
GCSE mark schemes reward specific phrasing. A 'good' answer that doesn't use the spec language often loses marks. Past papers are the only way to learn the language — for English Language specifically, see our Paper 1 question-by-question guide.
Our GCSE tutors usually have students do past-paper questions early — even before they 'feel ready'. The point isn't to score well; it's to learn what good answers look like. AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC each have their own mark-scheme conventions.
4. Interleaving (don't do all of one topic at once)
Interleaving means mixing related topics in a single session — for example, switching between trigonometry, algebra and geometry questions instead of doing only trig for two hours.
It feels harder. It is harder. And it produces stronger retention and better problem-solving on real exams, because exams interleave too.
What to drop
Highlighting, re-reading, and re-writing notes are the trio that look productive but barely move grades for most students. They feel useful because they reduce the discomfort of not-knowing — but that discomfort is exactly what learning needs.
If a student is doing 6 hours of revision a week and most of it is highlighting, the same 6 hours redirected toward retrieval, spaced practice and past papers will move grades faster than any extra hour added on.
